Description

Relatives of slain Syrian journalist Safaa Ahmed gathered for her funeral on Tuesday, which began at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Damascus and moved to her hometown of Homs. Ahmed was reportedly killed in an alleged Israeli strike on the capital’s Mezzeh neighbourhood.

Footage shows locals gathering and crying next to the journalist's house before the funeral procession began roaming the streets towards the burial site. Other footage captures the prayers being performed over her body.

Safaa Ahmed’s daughter Bella described the incident in which her mother was killed.

“My mother entered the room, and my brother warned her not to go inside because they would bomb again. They also hit the car beneath the building, the window broke out of pressure, and her neck was injured by shrapnel. My father and brother then began to scream and pull her. Her blood filled the room and the building too,” she said.

"In the year 1973, I was injured while fighting, and the injury of my daughter Safaa was the same as mine back then. God wrote her martyrdom, and we, young and old, are a martyrdom project while defending this country. May mercy be upon the martyrs of Syria and Lebanon as well as Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the martyr of the Arab nation,” the journalist's father stated.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) cited a source in the military, claiming that Israeli warships and drones struck Damascus while claiming most missiles and drones had been shot down, while three civilians were killed and nine were injured by the remaining projectiles.

The IDF had neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the bombing at the time of publication.

Safaa Ahmed began her career in journalism in 2002 and worked as a presenter for several talk shows on Syrian television. She is the 54th journalist to be killed in Syria since the start of the civil war.

On August 23, Israeli fighter jets conducted an aerial bombardment of the Hama and Homs countryside, injuring seven civilians.

The Israeli military does not usually announce airstrikes in Syria. The last official announcement of an attack on Syria came last Friday when it claimed to have assassinated a Hamas official in southern Syria that was responsible for rocket attacks on the Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
