Former US President Donald Trump was confirmed as the official Republican presidential nominee for the upcoming presidential election, following a roll call of delegates during the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee on Monday.

"2387 votes for President Donald J. Trump. Let's make it official. Accordingly, the chair announces that President Donald J. Trump, having received a majority of the votes entitled to be cast at the convention, has been selected as the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States," said Congress Speaker Mike Johnson stated.

It came just days after Trump was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania, and he was seen with a bandaged ear. For his vice president, he picked JD Vance, the 39-year-old senator from Ohio, who was seen being greeted by the cheering audience on his arrival at the event.

Attorney General of Iowa Brenna Bird proposed that the nomination of JD Vance be done by 'acclamation' - rather than a formal vote - with those in favour and saying 'Aye!' and opposed saying 'No'.

"In the opinion of the chair, the 'Ayes' have it, and the motion is adopted," she commented.

On his social media, Trump stated that 'after lengthy deliberation and thought' he decided to announce Vance as his running mate and his highlighted military service and academics, noting that his pick will be 'strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for' during his own campaign.

"As Vice President, JD will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our Troops, and will do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN," he added.

Born in Ohio, Vance gained widespread attention with the publication of his bestselling memoir 'Hillbilly Elegy' in 2016 and was elected to the Senate in 2022.

Previously, he was a strong critic of Donald Trump, calling himself a 'never Trumper' and claiming Trump was a 'terrible candidate' in a 2016 interview.

According to media reports, a former roommate even claimed Vance texted him in 2016 saying he went "back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical asshole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler."

When it re-emerged in 2022, Vance's team called it old news and a 'laughable' media story, adding that outlets had 'already covered it to death'.

Vance would become one of the youngest vice presidents in the country's history - and according to media reports, the first to sport facial hair in nearly a century, since Charles Curtis - who wore a moustache - in 1933.

The four-day convention comes just days after Saturday's shooting. During the rally in Butler, the former president was seen with blood on his face after a bullet grazed his ear, as well as raising his fist to the crowd and shouting 'fight' as the secret service moved him to the motorcade.

The gunman, named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by secret service agents at the scene. It was reported that he was a registered Republican, but had also donated $15 to a Democrat-aligned political action committee the day Joe Biden began his presidency.
