05:20Vietnamese hair stylist Nguyen Phat Tri has been turning heads in Ho Chi Minh City with his eye-catching floral designs that bring an entirely new meaning to the concept of wearing flowers in your hair.
Speaking from his hair salon in Vietnam’s largest city on Sunday, the 28-year-old floral master explained that he wanted to “create something different and special that has a Vietnamese impression to it. I want the Vietnamese hair industry to grow bigger and to be more well-known in the world.”
And Tri is helping to do just that. Generating millions of views on social media, his designs take inspiration from everyday life in Ho Chi Mihn City and Vietnamese culture in general. For example, after reading a short Vietnamese idiom about the ruby-red hibiscus flower, Tri created an entire hair design dedicated to the stunning East Asian fauna.
The young hair stylist had always had an inclination for the arts, but started out studying biotechnology at An Giang University. However, in 2015 he decided to quit his job to go alone to Ho Chi Minh City to study makeup and hairdressing, a decision which he has no regrets about.
Since then, he has branched out into reinterpreting other areas of his home country’s culture, such as creating a hairstyle in the shape of a traditional Vietnamese conical hat. He's even made designs inspired by Vietnam’s most popular sport, football.
However, the styles are often as complicated to create as the concept: sometimes it takes the hairdresser up to six months to complete a single design, including several days spent searching for appropriate accessories and material. And his hard work is paying off.
Tri says that since his work has become more well-known on social media, more customers have been coming to him, all the way from from brides to celebrities, and the work isn't cheap: Bridal designs cost between 3 and 5 million dong (€115 – €192; $130 – $218), while his more complex signature hairstyles cost between 5 and 7 million dong (€192 – €269; $218 – $305).
