Tehran residents gathered at the Imamzadeh Saleh shrine to pray for the safe return of their President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday, after reports emerged that his helicopter had been involved in a crash.

“We are sad and touched by hearing this piece of news," said Yasin Hosseini. "We hope that Mr. Raisi (Iranian president) and his accompanying delegation are found unharmed. Due to his good and diligent efforts for the (Iranian) nation, he is very popular. We call on God to give us back Mr. Raisi on this holy night.”

Footage shows men and women offering prayers at the Shia shrine.

“We heard the news in the media, from our (state) TV. And I heard they have crashed," said Hamidreza Valilu. "Yes, I hope they are fine. They (President Raisi’s government) worked for the country (Iran) but they didn’t perform as the nation expected. But we don’t want them to face any hardship. For the president and foreign minister (Hossein Amir-Abdollahian). I hope they are found, healthy and without harm.”

UPDATE: Raisi, his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others on board were confirmed dead by state media and officials on Monday, after rescuers found the crash site in the early hours of the morning.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was elected in 2021.
