Description

Paris residents endured heavy rain to join an Opening Ceremony watch party for the 2024 Olympics on Friday.

Footage shows sports fans clad in rain jackets and ponchos, holding umbrellas, and cheering despite the downpour as a large screen displayed the ceremony, which began with parades of athletes down the River Seine. It also featured dancing and performances along the banks.

As well as the downpours, the ceremony was marred by religious controversy over the apparent recreation of Leonardo da Vinci's 'Last Supper' with dancers and drag queens - as well as an upside down Olympic flag and the introduction of South Korea's athletes as the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea (DPRK).

Earlier, chaos also hit the railway network across France, which the authorities blamed on 'malicious' arson attacks.
