The explosion occurred at the al-Howeilat market in a Shiite suburb of the city and stronghold of local Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr.

Among the dead are four children and four women, according to a source at the Iraqi Interior Ministry.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack which occurred on the eve of Aid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice in Islam.
