Description

About two hundred demonstrators gathered in front of the UN building on Thursday to express their dissatisfaction with the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Among the protesters were relatives of Hamas hostages kidnapped on 7 October last year, who pleaded for a ceasefire and the return of their family members. Footage shows people holding placards saying ‘Save them’, ‘Stop the war’ and ‘Crime Minister’ in reference to Netanyahu.

According to the protesters, Netanyahu's main task is to bring the Hamas hostages home, and to do so, the fighting in Gaza must end, ‘the only condition by Hamas,’ as protester Romi Cohen, sister of hostage, put it.

‘We have to end the war and get a deal otherwise the hostages will not come home, specially my brother, a soldier a man, the last of the list,’ she added.

There were also claims at the protest that no one has ever taken responsibility for allowing the 7 October attacks to happen.

‘No one took responsibility for the greatest military loss in the history of Israel and is amazing they are still trying to decide policies, we need them to be removed from power, the whole region needs them removed from power,’ believes Sahiro, a relative of hostages.

The Gaza war began after Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israel. The Israel military conducted a large-scale campaign of air strikes and ground incursions in the enclave, killing at least 41,391 and injuring more than 95,760, according to the Palestinian side.

The Israel-Hamas war in Gaza recently expanded to include an escalation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon. Israel insists that the ongoing military actions are needed for its own security.

The UNGA High-level General Debate continues in New York until September 30.
