The US Capitol was evacuated after a nearby fire saw the interruption of Joe Biden's presidential inauguration rehearsal in Washington DC on Monday. Tensions are close to boiling point amid fears of a repeat of the deadly Capitol riot that occurred almost two weeks ago.
The fire was allegedly caused by propane gas in the tent of a homeless person, leaving one person with a "non-life-threatening injury," according to the DC fire and emergency services Twitter.
The US Capitol is on particularly high security alert due to the attack that took place by Trump supporters on January 6, that saw the death of five people, including law enforcement; and the arrest of dozens.
Security around the Capitol has been beefed up, with 25,000 National Guard being deployed in preparation for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on January 20. The ceremony will be significantly scaled down also partially due to the coronavirus pandemic.
