Description

A demonstration was held by the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah on Saturday to condemn a 'blockade' imposed by Israeli forces.

"Today, we have a protest against the concrete barriers that they put at the entrance of the neighbourhood. They are refusing to let anyone from outside of the neighbourhood in. Anyone who is not living here is not allowed beyond those barriers. Even for residents, every time we want to go out or back in, they request to see our IDs," said Muhammad Al-Sabbagh, a Palestinian resident.

Israeli forces were seen pushing and apprehending some of the demonstrators next to the fenced neighbourhood entry before an ambulance arrived to treat the injured.

Protesters chanted slogans and held signs next to Sheikh Jarrah, where a large number of soldiers were deployed by a checkpoint.

Demonstrators were calling on authorities to lift the lockdown they said was imposed two weeks ago on the neighbourhood, whose Palestinian citizens are facing the threat of displacement.

The Palestinian Red Crescent reported four injuries in Sheikh Jarrah.

Palestinian refugees relocated to the neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah in 1948 after being forced to leave their homes for the creation of the state of Israel. In early May, a court ruled in favour of Jewish settlers trying to evict the Palestinian families and reclaim the neighbourhood, leading to protests which escalated into violence between Hamas and Israel, killing 12 people in Israel and 248 Palestinians, including 66 children.

After a ceasefire was reached on Thursday, Hamas officials said they had received assurances Israel would 'lift its hands' from Sheikh Jarrah. The Israeli Supreme Court will hold hearings on the matter in June.
