Description

A German government spokesperson refused to comment on allegations recently published by a German NGO saying that Berlin had offered the US a deal to drop sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, at a press conference in the German capital on Wednesday.

"The federal government remains in contact with the US government in connection to the US sanctions and the sanctions threats in relation to Nord Stream 2. But these are confidential letters for example confidential correspondence and confidential conversations, and as a matter of principle we take no position on them," said spokesperson Ulrike Demmer.

On Tuesday, German environmental NGO Environmental Action Germany (DUH) published documents including a letter from German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz to then-US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, which they alleged provide evidence of a 'dirty deal' offered by the German government.

"We said that there were no updates on this issue because we give no information on confidential talks and with this background I had and I still have no updates to communicate," Economy Ministry spokesperson Christoph Kuhn added.

The DUH state that the letter they published shows Scholz offered to use €1 billion ($1.21 billion) of German government money to support the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, which would benefit US LNG imports.

In return the US would agree to cease any actions that would hinder the construction or operation of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project.
