Description

German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Adebahr said Berlin welcomed the first reports of a ceasefire in Libya during a news conference in the German capital on Friday.

"We are hearing from Libya that the Prime Minister of the government of the National Army and the leader of the House of Representatives in East Libya al-Sarraj and Haftar have agreed on the central conflict issues. The agreement is apparently related to first steps and conditions for a ceasefire in Sirte and al-Jufra and related to the urgent necessary lifting of the oil blockade," said Adebahr.

In addition to the ceasefire, the internationally-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli published a statement calling for elections in March.

Libya has been plagued by violence since Col Muammar Gaddafi was ousted in 2011. More recently, the forces of General Khalifa Haftar were fighting for control of Tripoli against the UN-backed GNA.
