Chanting and holding banners reading "Cancel the Tokyo Olympics," demonstrators called for an end to the Olympics amid the worsening COVID-19 situation within the country while demanding that money should be spent on fighting the pandemic.
"In Tokyo, more than 2,000 people are infected every day. Not only that, but the Olympics are a problem in many places, not just corona issue," a protester claimed. Another added that, "They should be able to spend more money on welfare and reconstruction."
The Games are taking place from 23 July to 8 August 2021 after being postponed last year due to the pandemic. This is the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed and rescheduled, rather than cancelled.
Shortly before the start of the games, on July 8, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared another state of emergency in Tokyo until August 22. This decision means no spectators, not even local Japanese attendees, will be able to attend the games in person in the Japanese capital.
