Residents of Washington DC reacted to the news that Democratic nominee Joe Biden had won the US presidential election on Sunday.

"I think that this is going to keep going on and hopefully we'll change and see the hopes and the dreams of America that should really be and could be," commented one local, as celebrations continued across the city.

Another resident, Kathrine, said she was excited that Kamala Harris was set to become the first female vice-president in US history, saying that "it feels like a weight is lifted off our shoulders."

Robin, another local woman expressed similar sentiments, saying that she was "so excited" and also felt like a "weight has been lifted."

While Biden has been declared the projected winner by media outlets in the US and has given a speech accepting his victory, Trump has not yet announced his concession and his campaign has said it intends to mount legal challenges over alleged electoral fraud in several states.
