The UN's top Libya envoy Ghassan Salame warned about the risk of the conflict in Libya turning into a regional war because of the involvement of non-Libyan parties, during a press conference at the UN offices in Geneva on Friday.

"I would like to warn that this escalation, which is taking us away from the truce agreed upon by both parties, is unacceptable," Salame said.

He added, "I would also like to add that there is a risk that the Libyan war turns into a regional war on the Libyan ground because of the intervention of the non-Libyans involved in the fight."

Salame also said that in the past few hours, " truce agreed upon on January 23 has been violated in an unprecedented way."

The UN-backed talks, proposed by world leaders at the Berlin peace conference earlier in January, started on February 4, between the Libyan warring parties, in an attempt to secure the ceasefire brokered by Turkey and Russia.
