Description

Washington residents shared their optimism for US President Joe Biden's new term as the security barriers erected for the inauguration were dismantled, in more than one way.

"The word that I'm feeling is relief. He did not blow up the world, he came closer to blowing up American democracy, but we survived, a new day in DC," said Khan, a Washington DC resident, who said he trusts Biden to lead the country.

The inauguration was the message that President Biden sent, about being president for all Americans and listening to everybody's concerns and grievances, and trying to get to the bottom of it for everybody. And then the diversity... the sheer... you know, Vice-President Harris," resident Bridget added.

Murals featuring Harris and uplifting statements including 'DC stands united against hate,' could also be seen in the footage recorded on Thursday.

During the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, Kamala Harris became the first woman to have taken the oath as vice-president, while Biden has become the US's 46th and oldest president at the age of 78.
