Izumi Nakamitsu, the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, told the UN Security Council that reestablishing the norm against chemical weapons in Syria is urgently needed, as she spoke at a virtual briefing in New York City on Thursday.

"There is an urgent need, not only to identify but hold accountable, all those who have used chemical weapons in violation of international law," said Nakamitsu.

The High Representative, backed up by Fernando Arias, Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), stressed that the declaration submitted by the Syrian Arab Republic could not be considered accurate nor complete per the Chemical Weapons Convention due to identified gaps and inconsistencies.

Bassam al-Sabbagh, Syria's Permanent Representative, responded, saying that his country categorically rejects all allegations as 'unrealistic conclusions or false perceptions.'
