Former police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd in a Minneapolis court on Friday.
Judge Peter Cahill said that the sentence was 10 years longer than the state's sentencing guidance for the charge due to Chauvin's "abuse of a position of trust and authority and also the particular cruelty shown to George Floyd."
Cahill emphasised that his judgement was not based on 'emotion or sympathy,' but added that he recognised and acknowledged the pain of the Floyd family.
