Hundreds hit the streets of Nagorno-Karabakh capital on Friday to hold a mourning rally to mark the 106th anniversary of the Armenian genocide by the Ottoman Empire.
Locals gathered next to the Saint Jacob church where a priest prayed for the repose of the souls of those murdered. Then the mourners took to the streets of Stepanakert calling to 'Fight till the end' and 'Remember, demand, release.' At the end of the rally, some people could be burning the national flags of Azerbaijan and Turkey on the street.
The Armenian genocide carried out by the Ottoman Empire took place during and after World War I, between the year 1915 and 1917 and 1920 and 1923, when Armenians were systematically murdered, displaced, deported, or placed in concentration camps. Around 1 million people are estimated to have died during the period.
Commemorations have taken place every year since the 1920s, marking the date in 1915 when hundreds of Armenian intellectuals were arrested in Constantinople, before being executed.
