Description

Turkish demining experts were seen clearing mines and explosives from south Tripoli on Monday, four days after they started working on clearing civilian areas across Libya from mines and IEDs.

Uniformed men wearing helmets bearing the Turkish flag were seen inspecting a bullet-ridden house and its surroundings.

The Turkish Armed Forces started demining operations on Thursday, amid an appeal of the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) to guarantee the safe return of civilians to areas retaken from Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA).

The GNA announced on June 6 it had retaken control of the Greater Tripoli Region as well as the "last major stronghold" of the LNA in Tarhuna.

Libya has been torn by conflict since the ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. More recently the country has been split into areas controlled by the GNA in Tripoli and the northwest, and territories held by eastern-based LNA in Benghazi, led by Haftar.
