Description

Palestinian families facing forced evictions from their homes in the neighbourhood of Silwan, East Jerusalem, took stock of the situation on Tuesday, one day before the Jerusalem District Court is set to hold a hearing.

"My father bought the house in 1963. Of course, I was born here and lived here. We are rooted in this place, we have friends and neighbours," said Souad Abu Rumuz, a resident facing eviction from the area.

"We need to support Jerusalem, and support the people of Palestine because here we suffer from ethnic cleansing," said Raafat Al-Basbous, an activist who gathered under the tent.

The Jerusalem Magistrate Court issued seven eviction rulings in 2020 ordering the eviction of seven Palestinian families in Batn al-Hawa.

An appeal hearing will be held at the Jerusalem District Court on Wednesday over the forced eviction of two of those Palestinian families in the Batn al-Hawa area of Silwan in occupied East Jerusalem.

The neighbourhood of Silwan is located outside the Old City and is home to around 33,000 Palestinians and several hundred Israeli settlers.
