Description

The wreckage from a number of Ukrainian armoured personnel carriers was seen in footage published by the Russian Defence Ministry from the Kursk region on Tuesday.

Footage shows the burnt-out vehicles, as well as a number of bodies on the ground.

The Ministry stated that the 810th Independent Guards Naval Infantry Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet of the Northern Group of Forces was carrying out combat missions to drive Ukrainian forces out of the region.

It added that "the marines had successfully ambushed the advancing AFU column, defeated the enemy and completely stopped the enemy's advance in this area".

The deputy battalion commander, known by his call sign 'Marik', claimed that 'every day we manage to push them back'.

At time of publication, the Ukrainian authorities had not commented on the statements by the Russian Defence Ministry. Last Friday, the commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, announced that his troops had advanced 2km in the Kursk region.

Ukrainian forces launched an offensive on the Kursk region on August 6, while Russia introduced a counter-terrorist operation in Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk on August 9.

Over 133,000 people have been evacuated from the Kursk border districts. Russian President Vladimir Putin called Kiev's attack a ‘large-scale provocation,’ while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it was to ensure the 'security' of his country. Kiev's Western allies remain divided over the use of their weaponry in the ongoing assault on Russian territory.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
