Russia's State Duma chairperson Vyacheslav Volodin stated that Russia and Nicaragua 'are striving for a multipolar world', at an event marking the 45th anniversary of the Nicaraguan Revolution in Managua on Friday.

Volodin added that Russia 'has always supported Nicaragua, and it does so now'. He also noted countries are doing all they can 'to make the world just'.

The State Duma press service reported that Volodin conveyed congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin to the people of Nicaragua and their leader on what is a significant date for the republic.

The Nicaraguan Revolution ended on 19 July 1979 with the victory of the Sandinista National Liberation Front. The uprising led to the overthrow of President Anastasio Somoza. The occasion is celebrated annually as a public holiday in Nicaragua.
