"Sacred days for us are coming in Ossetia - days of remembrance and silence. <...> For 20 years, on the first three days of September, we have been immersed in mourning for the children and adults who died in the terrorist attack," wrote the head of the North Ossetia-Alania Republic, Sergey Menyaylo, in his Telegram channel.
Mourning events dedicated to the victims of the siege of School No. 1 are held every year in Beslan and other Russian cities.
Celebrations marking the start of the school year were cancelled across North Ossetia, and school classes will begin on 5 September, at the end of the three-day mourning period.
On September 1 2004, a group of armed terrorists seized School No. 1 in the town of Beslan in Russia's North Caucasian region. The militants took more than a thousand adults and children hostage in the school’s sports hall for three days, denying them access to food and water. 334 people were killed in the terrorist attack, 186 of whom were children.
