Description

Russian Emergencies Ministry (EMERCOM) workers eliminated four unexploded ordnance in the water area of Sevastopol following the Uchkuevka beach shelling on Saturday.

Footage shows EMERCOM officers diving into the water and exploring the seabed near Uchkuevka beach, before they exploded the found ordnance.

Deputy Head of the Russian EMERCOM General Office in Sevastopol Viktor Strelkov claimed that the submunitions had been found at depths 'from two to five metres' and 'destroyed by three controlled explosions'.

"The Russian Emergencies Ministry's forces in Sevastopol carried out the elimination of explosive objects found at the bottom of Uchkuevka beach after the missile attack. During the survey of the water area, divers of the emergency department found four submunitions at depths from two to five metres. They were destroyed by three controlled explosions. Representatives of specialised departments of the Sevastopol Government, medical teams, law enforcement agencies, mobile communication and warning complex were involved on site to ensure the safety of work," he reported.

Strelkov also noted that the operation had been carried out 'as planned', claiming that work in the area 'continues'.

On 23 June, Russian Defence Ministry reported that a "terrorist missile attack was carried out on the city of Sevastopol by five American ATACMS tactical missiles equipped with cluster warheads."

The Ministry noted that four missiles were intercepted by air defence systems, while "the explosion of the fragmentation warhead of the fifth missile in the air led to numerous casualties among civilians in Sevastopol," when rocket fragments struck Uchkuevka beach.

The Defence Ministry attributed blame for the strike to "Washington, which supplied these weapons to Ukraine, as well as the Kiev regime, from whose territory this attack was launched." The press service also said that there would be a response.

The city’s governor Mikhail Razvozhayev reported via his Telegram channel that four people, including two children, were killed. 153 wounded required medical assistance, while 79 of them were hospitalised.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has opened a criminal case into a possible 'terrorist act', with investigators at the scene.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova claimed that the strike's timing was deliberate, as it fell on the Day of the Holy Trinity, which falls eight weeks after Easter Sunday.

"We perfectly understand what is inside the essence of the Kiev regime - it is a deep hatred for everything connected with Russia, with Russian culture. And of course, Orthodoxy and Christianity in general," Zakharova claimed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed Moscow had 'no doubt' that the US and 'its Ukrainian underlings' were involved in the incident in Sevastopol.

Monday, June 24, was declared a day of mourning in Sevastopol.

The advisor to the head of the Ukrainian president's office, Mykhaylo Podolyak, wrote in his Telegram channel that "there were not and cannot be any 'beaches', ‘tourist zones' or 'other fictitious signs of peaceful life' in Crimea'.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that Washington regrets "any civilian loss of life in this war" but was providing weapons to Ukraine so it "could defend its sovereign territory against armed aggression - that includes in Crimea."

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
