Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) had become 'one of the most influential, authoritative international structures', while speaking at a meeting of the organisation's Heads of State Council in Astana on Thursday.

"For almost a quarter of a century, our organisation has become an important mechanism of the system of international relations and it contributes significantly to ensuring sustainable growth and progress for all, fruitful interaction in politics and security, economy and culture. Our countries set the vector of development of the entire Eurasian continent. Through joint efforts, strengthening the Shanghai spirit and promoting the Shanghai principles, we've transformed SCO into one of the most influential, authoritative international structures. Thanks to the uniqueness and enormous potential of our association, global interest is steadily growing," he said.

Earlier at the summit, Tokayev also announced that Belarus had now become a 'fully-fledged' member at this year's meeting.

The 24th SCO Heads of State Council meeting chaired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is scheduled for July 3-4.

Leaders are expected to discuss the results of the SCO's activities for 2023-2024 and address co-operation in the political, security, economic and humanitarian spheres.

After the summit in Kazakhstan, the organisation’s presidency for 2024-2025 will pass to China.

The SCO now comprises 10 member states, 14 dialogue partners and two observer countries.
