Giant panda Ding Ding celebrated her birthday in Moscow zoo with swagger, pulling down and greedily munching from an arch laden with treats in her enclosure, in footage taken on Friday.
The footage shows Ding Ding spotting the unusual construction laid on for her by zoo workers, before quickly heading towards it. After discovering the edible treasures, Ding Ding wasted no time devouring the carrots and her favourite bamboo snacks, swiftly bringing the archway down around her.
Panda week, dedicated to the birthdays of Ding Ding and Ruyi, got underway in Moscow Zoo on July 29. The zoo press service reported that workers usually arrange one holiday for the endangered animals, while this year’s celebrations would last for a whole week.
"The zoo staff prepared thematic events. Tours, quests, workshop sessions, movie screenings and a gift-giving ceremony for the birthday boy and girl," the zoo added.
The zookeepers crafted an airplane from bamboo and stuffed it with various treats as a gift for Ruyi.
Ding Ding and Ruyi were brought to Moscow from Beijing in 2019 and reside in the 'Chinese Fauna' pavilion at Moscow Zoo, inaugurated by Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping.
Native to China, giant pandas are part of a worldwide conservation programme, with Ding Ding and Ruyi integral to the scientific initiative aimed at preserving and breeding the rare species. Pandas like Ruyi and Ding Ding are shared with other countries through special co-operation agreements to support their conservation and breeding.
