Russian state corporation Rosatom reported on Monday that the dome of the outer containment (OC) had been successfully installed at the Turkish Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Buyukeceli.
Footage shows the crane lifting the dome at the construction site.
"The installation of the heavy metal structure in the design position took six hours and was carried out using the world's most powerful tracked self-propelled crane. 30 Akkuyu NPP specialists took part in the installation operations," the corporation stated.
The Akkuyu NPP press service also said that the dome’s total weight amounted to almost 500 tonnes, while the wall thickness would reach 1.5 metres.
"The next stage will be concreting the OC metal structure with high-strength concrete mortar. This will allow us to start installing the heat removal system equipment," it stated.
Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear power plant under construction in Turkey. The project includes four power units with Russian designed generation 3+ VVER power reactors. The capacity of each power unit is 1,200 megawatts.
The project is fully financed by Russia and is being implemented under a intergovernmental agreement signed between Moscow and Ankara on May 12, 2010.
Construction began with a launch ceremony in 2018, which was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with Russian President Vladimir Putin joining him via video link.
