Russian President Vladimir Putin praised China, Brazil, and India for being 'genuinely interested' in finding a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, while answering a question about the potential mediator of any peace talks, during the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) plenary session in Vladivostok on Thursday.

"We respect our friends, partners, who, I believe, are genuinely interested in resolving all issues related to this conflict. These are, first of all, the People's Republic of China, Brazil and India. I am constantly communicating with our colleagues on this matter. No doubt, the leaders of these countries - we have trust-based relations with them - are earnestly committed to helping to deal with all the nuances of this complex process," Putin said.

The Russian leader also claimed that the Ukrainian position in key directions of the combat zone 'has weakened' due to their incursion in the Kursk region.

"Our armed forces have de-escalated the situation and have begun to gradually drive the enemy off the border territories. And secondly and most importantly, there are no efforts to counter our offensive. On the contrary, there are large and well-prepared units in the border areas, and the enemy’s position in key directions has weakened. And our troops have sped up their offensive operations," he added.

Ukrainian forces launched an offensive on the Kursk region early in August, while Russia introduced a counter-terrorist operation in Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk.

Putin called Kiev's attack a ‘large-scale provocation,’ while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it was to ensure the 'security' of his country. Kiev's Western allies remain divided over the use of their weaponry in the ongoing assault on Russian territory.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.

The IX Eastern Economic Forum is scheduled for September 3-6 in Vladivostok. Delegations from 62 countries, including China, India and African nations, are taking part in the events. The forum is aimed at creating and strengthening ties between Russian and foreign investment communities.
