Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peaskov said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's speech at the UN Security Council meeting, during which he stated that Russia 'can only be forced into peace', was a 'fatal mistake', during a press briefing in Moscow on Wednesday.

"From my point of view, this position is a fatal mistake. A fatal mistake, a system failure, a serious misconception, which will surely lead to inevitable consequences for the Kiev regime," Peskov said.

He clarified that it is impossible to force Moscow, as Russia is already committed to peace, but it is needed to be taken into consideration that the fundamental principles of its security are ensured.'

Peskov also disagreed with the statement of British Foreign Minister David Lammy, who accused Russia of violating the UN Charter.

He added that Moscow 'respects all principles and norms of international law and protects its legitimate interests' and 'Russia firmly opposes double standards when it comes to the interpretation of international law' which 'both the United Kingdom and the United States of America are known for this.'

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
