Description

A blast at a pumping station in Southern Russia's Volgograd city killed two people, the region's deputy governor Oleg Nikolayev reported on Saturday.

"The preliminary cause [of the blast] is a safety violation during repair works. There was a collapse of a building structure into sewage substances. Now there are two dead, the rest - those who were involved in the works - are in satisfactory condition," the deputy governor said.

Nikolayev added that the main task of the emergency services is to restore the water drainage system. The work is still in progress.

According to the EMERCOM (Russian Emergencies Ministry), the sewage pumping station roof exploded due to safety violations during repair work. 20 specialists and seven units of specialised equipment were transferred to the scene of the accident to clear the aftermath.

The Russian Investigative Committee for the Volgograd region opened a criminal case under violation of safety rules during work. An investigative team is examining the scene of the accident and establishing its circumstances.
