Russian Defence Ministry representatives claimed on Monday that the country’s troops had taken control over the villages of Novopokrovskoye in the Donetsk People's Republic and Stepovaya Novosyolovka in the Kharkov region.

The head of the press service of Russia’s Zapad Group of Forces, Ivan Bigma, reported that the Russian army had taken 'more advantageous lines' in the Kharkov direction.

"As a result of active actions, units of the Zapad Group of Forces liberated Stepovaya Novosyolovka (Kharkov region) and took more advantageous lines. Losses were inflicted on formations of the AFU 21st, 44th, 60th, 66th mechanised brigades, and 125th Territorial Defence Brigade near Makeyevka, Novovodyanoye, Nevskoye, Stelmakhovka [Lugansk People's Republic], and Terni (Donetsk People's Republic)," Bigma added.

In turn, Aleksandr Savchuk, the Tsentr Group of Forces spokesperson, reported five AFU counter-attacks had been repelled and added that "units … liberated Novopokrovskoye (Donetsk People's Republic) and improved the tactical situation. Losses were inflicted on formations of the AFU 24th, 31st, 110th, 118th mechanised brigades, 68th Jaeger Brigade, and 109th Territorial Defence Brigade near Yevgenovka, Novgorodskoye, Timofeyevka, Sokol, Toretsk, and Progress (Donetsk People's Republic)."

At the time of publication, the Ukrainian side had not commented on the statements. A summary from the AFU General Staff from Sunday noted that the most intense clashes were in the Pokrovskoye direction, and claimed the Russian military had attacked Ukraine's defensive lines 36 times.

"In particular, there are battles in the areas of Novoalexandrovka, Vozdvizhenka, Evgenovka and Novoselovka Pervaya", it specified. It also reported that the Russian Armed Forces had carried out eight attacks in the Kharkov direction in the last 24 hours.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.

The briefing published by the Russian Defence Ministry uses additional video footage. The location and date of that footage cannot be independently verified.
