Speaking at a meeting with students and professors of the Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus in Minsk on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia 'will not pause the special military operation' during possible negotiations.

"We said we would always be ready for peace talks, but we will not pause the special military operation during the talks. We have already had this experience, we have been deceived like that in April 2022," the diplomat explained.

Lavrov also claimed the West was 'incapable' to honour its commitments in key strategic areas that ensure 'the vital activity of a country'. He also alleged that, "it can abandon its commitments at any time, there are many examples of this, and not just abandon its commitments, but declare war on you, economically and in other senses."

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
