Description

Dozens of Moldovans took part in protests over the official visit of the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in Chisinau on Wednesday.

Footage shows protesters chanting slogans, holding the EAEU flag and banners reading 'Blinken, go home' and 'Enough with Sandu's dictatorship - we want peace'. The video also shows police officers taking away two demonstrators, including the advisor to the head of Gagauzia, Mihail Vlah.

The Moldovan police press service said that protesters, including representatives of the country's banned Shor party, had tried to block the roadway at the entrance to Chisinau where Blinken had to pass, before some of them were detained for document check.

There was no official information regarding the number of detainees at the rally at the time of publication.

The press office of the US State Department said that Blinken had arrived in Chisinau to participate in talks with Moldovan President Maia Sandu. The officials will discuss the process of the country's integration into the European Union, as well as energy security issues.

In March 2022, Moldova applied for EU membership. In June of the same year, the European Parliament adopted a resolution supporting the European Union candidate status for the republic.

On December 14, 2023, the head of the European Council Charles Michel posted on X (formerly Twitter) the decision to start negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the EU, adopted at a summit of EU leaders in Brussels.

On May 10, Moldovan MP Marina Tauber said at a meeting of the Russian State Duma in Moscow that Moldova could not develop without relations with Russia, CIS countries and the Eurasian Economic Union.

On December 24, 2023, Moldovan President Maia Sandu proposed to the parliament to hold a referendum on the issue of the country's integration into the European Union on the day of the presidential election in autumn 2024.
