Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that it wasn't his intention to take the 'side of the West' in the Ukrainian conflict but to find a 'resolution', speaking on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Friday.
"Our intention, our position is, of course, to find a […] resolution, not to take a side of the West against Russia. What benefit is this for us? Like the United States vis-a-vis China. We maintain good relations with both and why compel us to take sides?" Ibrahim said.
"[There is a certain] abandonment of moral principles and certainly apparent contradictions when we see conflicts like in Ukraine as compared to Gaza. You see that apparent contradiction, sometimes I call it even hypocritical. But still, ultimately what’s important is then to secure peace. Peace means to stop colonialism," he added.
Malaysia is also pushing for membership of BRICS, and the PM said it could help his country reduce dependence on the dollar - and would seek to participate in alternative financial institutions such as the New Development Bank.
"Our policy is of course to strengthen the Global South. And BRICS is a very important vehicle to strengthen that sort of collaboration among countries in the Global South. Not necessarily in antagonism, but at least to contain the onslaught of other richer industrialised countries and to be able to at least withstand the pressure, and together build up the force," he added.
The IX Eastern Economic Forum is held on September 3-6 in Vladivostok. Delegations from 62 countries, including China, India and African nations, are taking part.. The forum is aimed at creating and strengthening ties between Russian and foreign investment communities.
