A huge explosion was seen in Kharkov region on Monday, as the Russian Defence Ministry reported that its forces had destroyed a Ukrainian 'temporary deployment' base near Volchansk.
Footage shows a projectile landing on a building, powerful explosion and a thick plume of smoke rising after the impact.
"As a result of reconnaissance activities of the Russian armed forces, a temporary deployment point of the AFU was detected near the populated area of Volchansk in the Kharkov region. The co-ordinates of the target were given to the pilots of the Russian armed forces, who destroyed the point of temporary deployment of the enemy with a precision hit by an aerial bomb with a universal planning and correction module," the Ministry stated.
It also claimed that the command staff of one of the AFU units "was in the buildings at the time of the explosion".
In addition, the statement also reported that units of the 'Sever' group of forces had defeated "formations of the 57th motorised infantry brigade of the AFU, the 112th brigade of the Ukrainian army and the 4th border detachment of the Ukrainian Border Guard Service in the areas of Volchansk, Goptovka and Okhrimovka in the Kharkov region".
The Ukrainian side has not commented on the Russian claims about the destruction of a 'temporary deployment' point at the time of publication. However, the AFU General Staff said in its daily report that four attacks had been "repelled in the areas of Volchansk and Staritsa".
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
