President Vladimir Putin said that Russia's armed forces should be ready to repel "possible military aggression in any direction, including the ocean and maritime zone", ahead of the active phase of the Ocean-2024 strategic drills on Tuesday.

"I would like to emphasise that Russia must be prepared for any development of the situation, and our armed forces must provide reliable protection of Russia's sovereignty and national interests and repel possible military aggression in any direction, including the ocean and maritime zone," he said.

Putin added that Russia’s Navy played a 'key role' in ensuring the country’s security.

"Our sailors have always courageously stood guard over the security of our homeland. Today, in the course of a special military operation, they are selflessly fighting in the hottest spots on the frontline, delivering crushing blows to the enemy, effectively destroying its military facilities and infrastructure, acting bravely and professionally. They are true heroes," Putin continued.

The Ocean-2024 strategic command-and-staff exercise is scheduled for September 10-16 in the waters of the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean, Caspian and Baltic Seas.

The Kremlin press service said that the exercise involves more than 400 ships of various types, 125 helicopters and planes from naval aviation and the air force, as well as around 7,000 weapons and more than 90,000 servicemen.

Ships and aviation from the People's Liberation Army of China are also participating, while representatives of 15 foreign countries have been invited as observers.
