Russian President Vladimir Putin was seen in Ufa on Thursday awarding the Order of Friendship to Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, cousin of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) leader and head of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF), for his contribution to the promotion of chess in Russia and abroad.

Footage shows the Putin presenting Al Nahyan the order and the two shaking hands before sitting down at a table.

"I think that the Russian Chess Federation deserves more than what we can offer. <...> I would be happy to push forward more the youth movement in chess and take the White Rook tournament as an initiative," Al Nahyan said.

For his part, Putin stated that 'chess knows no borders' and thanked Al Nahyan for developing good relations between the countries.

"Your efforts have greatly enhanced international sports collaboration, heightened the profile of chess, and nurtured talented and promising players," Putin pointed out, adding, "I wish to underscore your role in strengthening ties with Russia and in supporting our chess players, both professional and amateur."

Putin arrived in Ufa on Thursday to participate in the plenary session of the International Sports Forum 'Russia - a Sports Power'. Earlier, he visited the Fencing Centre and also met with participants in the Heroes of Our Time tournament for veterans of the special military operation.
