Members of the United Russia party, the Brotherhood Corps and the United Russia Young Guard gathered on Thursday at the memorial complex to the Battle of Kursk in Ponyri to mark National Flag Day and unfurl the Russian tricolour.

"It is important that our national flag symbolises purity, loyalty and bravery. For many years, important heroic deeds and exploits were carried out under this flag. Now our warriors are standing on Kursk land to defend Russia," stated Evgeny Maslov, head of the regional executive committee of the United Russia party.

Alexei Smirnov, interim governor of the Kursk region, also took the opportunity to extend his best wishes to his fellow citizens on Russia's Flag Day via his Telegram channel.

"The Kursk region will continue its development for the benefit of our motherland, and the citizens of Kursk will proudly contribute to the common cause of Russia's strengthening and prosperity, united under the Russian flag," Smirnov said.

Flag Day is celebrated on August 22 every year across Russia.

The holiday was established in 1994 by former president Boris Yeltsin. The current flag itself was first officially hoisted over the White House in Moscow on August 22, 1991, replacing the sickle and hammer.

Ukrainian forces entered the Kursk region on August 6 in an offensive described by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a 'large-scale provocation'. A counter-terrorist operation regime was introduced in the Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions on August 9, while more than 120,000 people have been evacuated from the Kursk border districts.

President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as 'purely [a] security issue for Ukraine', with fighting ongoing.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
