Description

St Petersburg hosted the City of Sand Sculptures festival, dedicated to its history and culture, as seen in footage from Saturday.

The video shows the huge, intricate creations depicting people including Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, singer Viktor Tsoi and Peter the Great.

"The sculptors come from nine cities. We have purposely selected them from all over the country. These are excellent artists from such cities as Arkhangelsk, Kargopol, Ufa, Izhevsk, and, certainly, the capital of the Ural region, Yekaterinburg, Nevyansk, and others," festival director Nikolai Lobutin explained.

He also shared the secrets behind sand art, including why the creations don't dry out and blow away.

"They stay in shape because of the water, and sand composition. Sand contains clay loam and special water-based emulsion paint in small quantities," Lobutin added.

One attendee Ekaterina, said the festival was a 'miracle', and that she had been most taken by the Tsoi sculpture.

City of Sand Sculptures takes place at St Petersburg’s 300th Anniversary Park from August 24 to September 8.
