UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan spoke of his pride in working with Russia on the 'humanitarian aspect' of the Ukraine conflict - namely the POW exchanges - during a meeting with his counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday.

"I seize this opportunity to thank you for facilitating the UAE's mediation mission a few days ago for swap prisoners between Russia and Ukraine," he said. "This is the ninth mediation since the beginning of this year, and I take pride in working with you on this humanitarian aspect. The UAE is always ready for any additional efforts in this regard and any initiatives to help resolve crises in a manner that serves the interests of all parties and supports peace in the world."

Just recently, on Friday, October 18, Moscow and Kiev exchanged a total of 190 POWs under an agreement brokered by the UAE.

The Russian Defence Ministry reported that all 95 of its troops "were returned from the territory controlled by the Kiev regime as a result of the negotiation process." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that 95 of his citizens had also returned.

The UAE president visited Moscow to meet Putin ahead of the BRICS summit. During the discussions, the UAE leader said that the Emirates favoured a "multipolar world that fosters development for all nations", and also thanked Putin for Russia's contribution in sending Emirati cosmonaut Hazza Al Mansouri into space.

The Russian leader added that their talks - which also took place on Sunday - had discussed 'issues that require special attention' in an 'informal atmosphere', and had also focused on increasing trade between the countries.

The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled for October 22-24. World leaders from 22 countries are expected, with delegations expected 36 nations, for one of the major economic, political and cultural events of the decade.

Russia has chaired BRICS since January 1, 2024. The group also expanded this year, growing in both size and influence to nearly half the world’s population and a third of the global economy.
