Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the mutual understanding and co-operation between Moscow and Delhi during talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan on Tuesday.

"In Kazan, we must take a number of important decisions aimed at further improving the activities of the association and strengthening the multifaceted co-operation within its framework. We have such a relationship that I think we understand each other perfectly," Putin said.

Footage also shows Modi embracing Putin, appearing to shrug off any criticism from Western countries about his hug with the leader earlier this year.

Putin also commended New Delhi's decision to open a consulate general in Kazan. Modi, in turn, expressed his support for resolving the Ukrainian crisis.

"We are in regular contact on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I said, we believe that problems should be resolved peacefully. We fully support the early establishment of peace and stability. We put humanity first in all our efforts and we stand ready to help in any way we can in the future," Modi noted.

Modi announced the opening of two new diplomatic missions in Kazan and Yekaterinburg during a meeting with representatives of the Indian community in Moscow in July, to facilitate travel and business co-operation between citizens of the two countries.

The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled for October 22-24. World leaders from 22 countries are expected, with delegations from 36 nations, for one of the major economic, political and cultural events of the decade.

Russia has chaired BRICS since January 1, 2024. The group also expanded this year, growing in both size and influence to nearly half the world’s population and a third of the global economy.
