Description

The Head of Georgia's Central Election Commission, Giorgi Kalandarishvili, announced the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections on Saturday, indicating that 97.48 percent of the votes have been counted.

The ruling party, Georgian Dream, is currently in the lead with 52.99 percent of the vote, surpassing the opposition bloc. Other parties, including Gakharia - For Georgia (8.22 percent), Strong Georgia (9.2 percent), Unity - National Movement (9.83 percent), and Coalition of Changes (11.2 percent), have achieved the minimum threshold of votes required to secure seats in the legislature.

"The elections took place in a calm and free atmosphere. We had an immediate response to various issues, which did not affect the election process, much less the results. The voter turnout and the fact that the process was virtually error-free confirm that the election commission organised the elections in accordance with international standards," Kalandarishvili added.

According to the latest data from the Central Election Commission, approximately two million people participated in the election, representing a turnout of 59 percent of the eligible voters. A total of 3,044 polling stations were operational across the country, with an additional 67 stations functioning abroad.

Meanwhile, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili took to her account on the X social media platform to assert that the pro-European opposition 'won with 52 percent despite attempts to rig the elections.'

Factions must win at least 5 per cent, and seats in the legislature will be distributed among the parties in proportion to the number of votes cast for their lists. The political movement that comes first will present a candidate for prime minister.
