Description

Panda cub Katyusha decided to explore new tastes by snatching a carrot from her mother, Ding Ding, but mastering the unfamiliar vegetable proved to be a challenge.

In footage captured on Sunday, the young panda can be seen struggling to nibble on the crunchy carrot. With determination, Katyusha even uses her back paw to assist in the effort. After her snack time, Katyusha returns to playing on a wooden bar, unfazed by the culinary adventure.

Born in August last year, Katyusha was named after the popular Russian folk song following a public vote on Moscow city's online portal. Her parents, Ding Ding and Ruyi, were brought to Moscow from Beijing in 2019 and reside in the 'Chinese Fauna' pavilion at Moscow Zoo, inaugurated by Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping.

Giant pandas, native to China, are iconic symbols of conservation efforts worldwide. Ding Ding and Ruyi are integral to a scientific initiative aimed at preserving and breeding this rare species.

In the wild, pandas are exclusively found in China and are considered a national treasure. Through cooperative agreements, pandas like Ruyi and Ding Ding are shared with other countries to support conservation and breeding programmes.
