Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov said that a 'promising new application' of the country’s Navy would be tested during the Ocean-2024 military exercises, speaking ahead of the active phase of the drills on Tuesday.

"It is planned to practice tasks of repelling large-scale aggression from a likely enemy in the ocean, fighting unmanned boats and aircraft, defending naval bases, conducting amphibious operations, and escorting convoys. <...> According to the exercise plan, a promising new application of the Navy will be tested, an independent operation in ocean areas, will be tested," he said.

Belousov also stressed that all drills would be carried out taking into account the 'experience' gained from the Ukraine conflict.

Meanwhile, Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Alexander Moiseev added that the drills would include the participation of foreign allies.

"The Navy, as part of the Aerospace Forces, together with foreign partners, has begun to conduct a strategic command and staff exercise. This exercise will take place over a period of seven days in a bilateral format and will be divided into two stages. The warring parties will include the Pacific, Baltic, and Caspian Fleets on our side, and the Northern Fleet will represent the enemy," he said.

The Ocean-2024 exercises take place between September 10-16 in the waters of the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean, Caspian and Baltic Seas. The Kremlin press service said that the drills would involve more than 400 ships of various types, 125 helicopters and planes from naval aviation and the air force, approximately 7,000 weapons, and over 90,000 servicemen.

Russia also confirmed that ships and aircraft from China's People's Liberation Army were taking part in the exercises. Additionally, representatives from 15 foreign countries have been invited to observe the drills.
