President Vladimir Putin was presented with a Quran by the assistant to the Mufti of Dagestan, Zapir Salimov, during his visit to Derbent Juma Mosque for Eid al-Adha celebrations on Wednesday.

The Russian leader quoted the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill, as saying that 'Muslims are our brothers', during his trip to the holy site.

"Thanks to such religious figures as you, we have a strong inter-religious and inter-confessional peace in our country. The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia preaches to Orthodox Christians to maintain this state, and all the time he tells us 'Muslims are our brothers!' Putin said.

The Russian president also visited the Naryn-Kala citadel, where he had a guided tour and viewed an exhibition of folk crafts. In the evening, Putin arrived at the city's main square to greet the local residents.

Putin was accompanied by Presidential Envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District Yuri Chaika, the Head of the Republic of Dagestan Sergei Melikov and Senator from the Republic of Dagestan Suleiman Kerimov.

The Naryn-Kala citadel was built in the sixth century. It is part of the ancient Derbent fortress and the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Derbent Juma Mosque is the oldest mosque on the territory of Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
