Description

The court hearing in the case against Evghenia Gutul, the Governor of Gagauzia, was adjourned to June 26 on Wednesday due to the absence of her lawyer, who was allegedly detained at the airport in Moldova after travelling to Russia.

"Today PAS [Party of Action and Solidarity] has deprived me of the right of defence. My lawyer has been detained for several hours at the airport. When I went out today, I was surprised that I was permitted to leave without any obstacles, inspection and interrogation," the politician said.

"It turned out that their goal was to have me alone at today's hearing, without my defence lawyer. Is this what justice is all about? Shame," she continued.

Gutul stands accused of 'channelling Russian funds to the Shor party'. The party, presided over by Israeli-born businessman and Politician Ilan Shor, was declared unconstitutional by the Moldovan Constitutional Court in June 2023.

On March 6 2024, the acting Prosecutor General of Moldova, Ion Munteanu, referred the case against the head of the autonomous region of Gagauzia to court.

On June 3, Gutul claimed that the case against her was 'framed up' and called on the Moldovan authorities to stop prosecuting opposition politicians and address the problems of the citizens instead.
