Russia is ready to act as a mediator to resolve the conflict in the Middle East, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at a meeting with the heads of leading BRICS media agencies in Novo-Ogaryovo on Friday.

"We are in contact with Israel and with Iran," began the president, "We would very much like to see this seemingly endless exchange of blows stop at some point and find ways of resolving the situation that would satisfy both sides. But the answer to this question always lies on the path of finding compromises. Is that possible in this situation? I think it is."

The Russian leader also revealed details of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's upcoming visit to Moscow - which was confirmed by the Kremlin on Friday.

"We have very good relations with the Arab Emirates, I have a very trusting, friendly contact with the President. I am sure that his visit will be very fruitful, including the unofficial part," he said. "I want to invite him to my home, right here literally right next door. We will have dinner, sit down, spend the evening together, talk about all current issues."

The Israel-Hamas war has continued for over a year, after the militant group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials. Israel strongly denies allegations of 'genocide' and says only Hamas locations and infrastructure are targeted.

The conflict recently spread to Lebanon, with Israeli airstrikes and a ground incursion against Hezbollah. Iran launched a wave of airstrikes against Israel on October 1, following the killing of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and others.

The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled for October 22-24. Leaders from more than 24 countries are expected to attend, with Russia's closest neighbours and partners in the Eurasian Economic Union and Commonwealth of Independent States also invited. Russia has chaired BRICS since January 1, 2024.
