03:45Chinese President Xi Jinping said that Russia and China must consistently strive to protect their legitimate rights and interests, while participating in a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Kazakhstan's capital Astana on Wednesday.
"We must forever uphold our commitment to friendship, work hard for the people's welfare, enhance the unique value of China-Russia relations, cultivate new driving forces for co-operation, and make unremitting efforts to protect our legitimate rights and interests and the basic norms of international relations," the Chinese leader said.
Russian President Putin noted that Russia-China relations are thriving and have reached a historical peak.
"They are based on the principles of equality, mutual benefit and respect for each other's sovereignty. Our co-operation is not directed against anyone. We are not creating blocs or alliances. We are simply acting in the interests of our peoples," Putin added.
According to the Russian leader, 'Russian-Chinese interaction in world affairs is one of the most important stabilising factors in the international arena'.
The 24th SCO Heads of State Council meeting chaired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is being held in Astana on July 3-4.
Leaders are discussing the outcomes of the SCO's activities for 2023-2024, and exploring co-operation in political, security, economic and humanitarian affairs.
After the summit in Kazakhstan, the organisation’s presidency will pass to China for 2024-2025.
The organisation comprises India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as 14 dialogue partners and 3 observer countries.
