Wife of Russian-Spanish journalist Pablo Gonzalez, also known as Pavel Rubtsov, Oihana Goiriena shared her emotions about her husband's return as a result of the unprecedented West-Russia prisoner swap, speaking in an interview with Russian media in Nabarniz on Friday.

"I haven't been able to talk to my husband yet, he hasn't called me. Firstly, as you said, he needs to undergo a medical examination. And I assume that when all the technicalities are over, he will call and tell us how he is feeling after two years and five months in solitary confinement. <...> And now I answer these questions in a different mood, considering that my husband is free and he is not accused of anything," said Goiriena.

The wife of the released journalist also stated that the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs 'violated the right to the presumption of innocence' of Rubtsov.

"By claiming that the charges against him were serious and the evidence was indisputable. Although the Polish authorities have not brought any charges against him or provided any evidence in two years and five months," she added.

Meanwhile, Oihana Goiriena revealed that during the two years and five months of Rubtsov's imprisonment, neither she nor their children were able to talk to their father,

"No action had been taken on the part of Spain to resolve the situation, they had not even tried to put pressure on the Polish government to at least set a trial date. They did not try to fight for the respect of basic human rights, such as the right to family life and communication with family members," she concluded.

Rubtsov was included in a large-scale prisoner swap between Moscow and five Western countries announced on Thursday which saw the release of 26 detainees to their respective nations. The Russian-Spanish dual citizen had been held by Poland since February 2022 on suspicion of spying for Russia while working as a journalist.

In turn, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Thursday evening that "the prisoner exchange operation has just ended, thanks to which Russian opposition heroes and detained citizens of NATO countries detained have left Russia".

On Thursday, 26 people including 24 adults and two minors were released in the most significant prisoner exchange between Russia and the West since the Cold War. This exchange saw 16 prisoners held in Russia and 10 detainees, including two minors, in the US, Norway, Germany, Poland, and Slovenia set free.
