Russian President Vladimir Putin kissed the Quran during a visit to the Prophet Isa Mosque in Grozny on Tuesday.

Footage shows Putin and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov taking turns to touch and kiss the holy book, before the president spoke with the republic's mufti Salakh Mezhiyev.

The Kremlin press service noted that the Quran was a gift to the mosque from the Russian head of state. The holy book is decorated with gilded ornaments and jewels.

Construction of the Prophet Isa Mosque (Jesus Christ in the Muslim tradition) began in June 2020. The building is surrounded by four 20-metre-high portal arches and four 52-metre-high minarets. The mosque has two floors and can accommodate up to five thousand worshippers.
